Rome Shore Excursions: the eternal city in one day

rome shore excursions

Roma Caput Mundi or the Eternal City. Both names  apply to thisenchanting city. And with good reason. According to tradition it  wasfounded in 753 BC and over time it became the capital of what was to grow into the most powerful and civilized empire of antiquity, stretching from  Britain to the Caspian Sea, from North Africa to AsiaMinor. Obviously, then, a  tour of Rome can only start from theColosseum, which, appropriately  enough, is the best known symbol ofRome throughout the world.

The many fierce  gladiatorial fights, the thousands of wild beastsslain, the mock sea battles  re-enacted there all contributed to makethis structure the most famous of its  kind in antiquity. The crossesstanding in various parts of the arena also remind  us of thesignificance this awesome structure has acquired over time for Christianity because of the Christian martyrs who are said to havebeen killed  there during the persecutions by the Roman emperors. Closeto the Colosseum,  the glorious remains of the Forum tell the story ofa market place that  was in fact the hub of Roman public activity, withpeople meeting there to  discuss business and daily events.

The Pantheon, nearby, is one of the  best preserved ancient Romanbuildings and has a very particular history: from  its originaldestination as a temple to the gods it was subsequently turned  into aChristian church. During the Renaissance some outstanding artists, such as Raphael and Carracci, were buried there and in the 19th  century itbecame the burial place of Italian kings. Only a short distance away lies Piazza Navona, perhaps Rome's most famous square. There is nodoubt  that its elegant design, the artistically intriguing fountainsdecorating it  and the Baroque majesty of the Church of Sant'Agnese inAgone,  which overlooks Piazza Navona, make the square so beautiful. Its history is  equally fascinating.

The stadium built by Emperor Domitian in the fist century  AD wasused for sporting events. Later it became a market square where processions or festivals were also held. In the 17th century it wasrebuilt and  embellished by Pope Innocent X. Contrary to popularbelief, no mock sea battles  ever took place in this square, but inantiquity the square was actually  flooded in summertime to refresh thearea. And, speaking of water, the most  famous fountain in Rome is nodoubt Trevi Fountain. You simply cannot  afford to miss it: how elsecould you throw your coin in there? As for Roman  squares, everybody'smind immediately runs to Piazza di Spagna, which is  better known asthe Spanish Steps, from the stairs leading down to it  from the Churchof Trinita' dei Monti.

This lovely square has been the  subject of so many films andpaintings that it has long been an all-time  favourite of tourists fromall over the world. Its charming Baroque style is  hard to describe, but certainly holds all visitors spellbound. Bocca della  Verita' isanother little jewel in Rome's crown and is so dear to the  hearts ofall visitors that it has become an icon of the Eternal City. But there is another aspect of Rome that makes this city truly unique. WhileChristianity  was born on the eastern shores of the Mediterranean, itfound its natural seat  in Rome.  Thus, this tour must necessarilyinclude a trip to the Vatican  to admire, at least from the outside,St. Peter's Basilica and to visit  the Vatican Museums where you willfind one of the best collections of  antiquities from Egyptian times tothe Renaissance.

Located at the far end of  the Museums, the Sistine Chapel requires no introduction:
Michelangelo's  fresco of the Last Judgment is literally breathtakingand is certain to  leave an indelible memory on anyone taking part inthis magic tour, which will  end with a drive to Janiculum Hill toadmire a splendid panorama of the  city below.

Christian Rome

The Colosseum is normally associated with images of gladiators, wild beasts and fierce fights. But since tradition tells us that Christians were also tortured and killed in this arena, this structure has also come to be seen as an important symbol for Christianity. The crosses in the Colosseum remind us of this and it is certainly appropriate to include a visit to the Colosseum in a Tour of Christian Rome. Visiting Rome's major Basilicas will provide an insight into the heart not just of the City, but of Christianity itself. St. Peter's Basilica, which is the largest church in the world, was established specifically to represent the central focus of Christendom. Completed in the 17th century, this architectural masterpiece was the result of the work of many famous artists such as Bramante, Antonio da Sangallo, Michelangelo, Raphael and Bernini and stands over the area of an old 4th century church. St. Peter's tomb is situated below the Basilica. Incidentally, St. Peter's Basilica is part of the Vatican City, which is a State by itself, though physically located inside Rome. St. Mary Major is  another beautiful and very old (5th century) Basilica and so is St. John Lateran, which is the cathedral church of Rome and the official seat of the Pope (as such, it ranks first among all Roman Catholic churches, including St. Peter's). St. Paul Outside the Walls was founded by Emperor Constantine in the 4th century on the burial place of St. Paul the Apostle.

Visiting Pantheon during a shore excursion in Rome

Posted on 12 December 2008 at 12:41

After the Vatican visit in the morning you can spend the afternoon day tour in Rome visiting the ancient Rome starting from the Pantheon.
The original Pantheon was a rectangular temple built by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa, son-in-law of Augustus, the first Roman emperor, as part of a district renewal plan in 27-25 BC. What tourists see as they relax in front in the Piazza della Rotonda is radically different than that original temple. Hadrian rebuilt the structure in the second century AD; maker's stamps in the bricks allow us to date his restoration between 118 and 125 AD. Still, the inscription on the architrave attributes the construction to Agrippa during his third councilship. The Pantheon is a church of Rome today and contains the tombs of Rafael and of several Italian Kings who unified Italy in the nineteen century.

The Pantheon is made perfectly harmonious by the fact that the distance from the floor to the top of the dome is exactly equal to its diameter. Adytons (shrines recessed into the wall) and coffers (sunken panels) cleverly reduce the weight of the dome, as did a lightweight cement made of pumice used in the upper levels. The dome gets thinner as it approaches the oculus, the hole in the top of the dome used as a light source for the interior. The thickness of the dome at that point is only 1.2 meters.

The oculus is 7.8 meters in diameter. It rains and snow occasionally fall through it, but the floor is slanted and drains cleverly remove the water if it manages to hit the floor. In practice, rain seldom falls inside the dome.

The massive columns supporting the portico weigh 60 tons. Each was 39 feet (11.8 m) tall, five feet (1.5 m) in diameter and made from stone quarried in Egypt. The columns were transported by wooden sledges to the Nile, barged to Alexandria, and put on vessels for a trip across the Mediterranean to the port of Ostia. From there the columns came up the Tiber by barge.

After the visit to the ancient Rome your full day Rome cruise tour will end at the port of Civitavecchia or to the airports of Rome.
